Moisturizers can be hard to select for your skin type. Keep reading for, in my opinion and experience, the best face moisturizers I will discuss 3 different types within this article: moisturizers that do contain SPF, moisturizers that do not contain SPF, and oils. I recommend one of each within your skincare regimen; even if you don’t utilize each daily.
Patients commonly tell me “I’m oily so I don’t need a moisturizer.” This, actually, is opposite from the truth. The skin can over produce oil as a result of dehydration. Every skin type needs moisture in some form to restore and maintain the skin barrier. You simply need the right type to complement the other products you are using and sit well on your skin.
When looking for a moisturizer for oily skin, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and oil free are the best way to go. Make sure the packaging specifies these two attributes if you’re worried about oil over production.
Your morning moisturizer should always contain SPF for multiple reasons. More specifically, ensure the form of SPF is zinc (at least 6%). Anything with SPF will state the active ingredients on the back at the top.
If you are a current reader, you know what I’m about to say. The sun is half the reason for oxidative damage to your skin. What does that even mean? Fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, pigmentation changes such as melasma, and the list goes on. If you are not currently utilizing a broad spectrum SPF daily, you are wasting your money on all other products and procedures.
That’s right, the vitamin C serum, retinoid, or lasers will be counteracted solely by not applying sunscreen daily.
This SPF moisturizer is great for oily, acne-prone skin. It’s very light weight and contains lactic acid to help the pores stay cleaned out. Niacinamide is also an ingredient, which helps calm redness and inflammation. I will recommend this to most all my patients that tell me they are a normal to oily skin type. Even if you do not have acne, this is a very versatile option.
I recommend Elta UV Elements for patients with skin on the dry side, or easily become irritated with adding active ingredients to their skincare routine. It contains hyaluronic acid which is very hydrating. There is dimethicone in this moisturizer, therefore it has a primer feel. It goes very well under makeup.
A drugstore option for normal to dry skin, although I warn patients even though this claims to be non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), I have found in a few patients when removing this product their acne cleared much easier. This works very well for an affordable moisturizer, but if you feel your pores become clogged (skin colored bumps) after using this product, you may need to consider an alternative.
Men love this fluid. Yes, it is so light it comes out like a fluid rather than a gel, cream, or lotion. It is also ideal for oily skinned individuals. Make sure you get the “mineral” version because there are two identical products named Anthelios with the exception of one contains zinc and one does not.
The name of the product says it all. This is on the higher end of price compared to the previously mentioned, but it’s worth the money. Read the 5 star REVIEWS for yourself. Not only is it a broad spectrum SPF moisturizer, it also repairs existing damage. Studies have shown this product improves fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. Most other SPF moisturizers only protect against the harmful UV rays, not repair the damage done as well.
I mostly use moisturizers without SPF in my evening routine. In the winter when I feel more dry I may add a moisturizer without SPF in the morning, but most of the time my hyaluronic acid or facial oil will compensate for the dryness.
There are so many facial moisturizers on the market to choose from. It’s so easy to get lost in what celebrities or influencers are using or ones that have numerous “anti-aging” or “anti-oxidant” properties. I promise it is not that complicated.
Ask yourself what your skin needs.
If you already have a vitamin c, a retinoid, and hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine, you only need a basic moisturizer without any bells or whistles.
If you don’t have any active ingredients you should opt in for a moisturizer with an active ingredient or two.
A drugstore option for all skin types. It’s very lightweight although contains shea butter, peptides, and thermal spring water for optimal moisturization and soothing. My go-to recommendation for acne patients or beginner skincare routines.
I recommend this rich cream for very sensitive, dry skin as an affordable option. I only start patients on this product when they are certain any active ingredient will irritate or we cannot get the skin moisturized enough after adding in a retinoid.
A multipurpose moisturizer to help with hydration and anti aging. It contains niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants. Perfect for all skin types, especially sensitive skin. Free of fragrance, parabens, and oil.
This moisturizer contains active ingredients in addition to moisturizing properties. Vitamin C for brightening and other antioxidants for anti aging. Hyaluronic Acid to amplify moisture.
This moisturizer is on the pricey side although it is one of my holy grails. It’s so moisturizing with ceramides and smells so good with essential oils. If you want to see for yourself check out the REVIEWS.
When I mention a facial oil, the most common reaction is fear.
Most people are fearful oils will clog their pores and cause acne. While I do not recommend starting any type of new oil while your acne is actively flared, most of my favorite oils contain exfoliative ingredients that will keep pores cleaned out.
I have personally tried each oil I recommend and recommended to patients, friends, and family. Feedback is nothing but positive and no reports of breakouts, especially from acne prone skin.
Again, you must select the right product for your skin type to ensure the best possible outcome. With that being said, I know there are people out there that cannot use a facial oil for one reason or another. Although, general consensus is they are a great addition to your skincare regimen.
Oils are ideal for dehydrated skin or skin needing to compensate dryness from active ingredients.
Ideal for acne prone or dull skin types. Contains oils that help with inflammation and exfoliation. Light-weight.
Ideal for dehydrated and aging skin. Contains oils with natural acids to aid in anti aging and glowing skin. Medium weight.
Reduces redness and irritation. Ideal for sensitive skin types such as rosacea. Contains CBD (hemp seed). Light-weight.
This is my current go-to. This oil/serum is very hydrating, contains CBD to counteract the exfoliative oils within the product. It’s ideal for antiaging, brightening and hydration.
